Cool J. and Jada Pinkett-Smith. Studio work includes scripts for Fox Searchlight, MTV Films, Paramount and Disney. He has sold pitches and original specs, adapted novels, rewritten scripts by other writers, worked in feature animation and recently scripted his first movie musical. He is probably best known for his reoccurring role as the creepy "Lincoln Meyer" on season three of ABC's BOSTON LEGAL. His weekly blog, PARTS AND LABOR (a seriocomic look at being middle-class in Hollywood) has developed a dedicated following. (see sidebar for more info). A former off-Broadway actor & playwright ("Dearly Departed") and active WGA member, he mentors young writers each summer in a writing lab He helped found seven years ago. His first short film, AVAILABLE MEN (which he also directed) had its world premiere at the 2007 HBO Comedy Arts Festival and went on to win 17 "Best Short Film" awards on the festival circuit including the World Comedy Festival in Toronto. Recent acting gigs include guest star roles on HARRY'S LAW, CASTLE, CRIMINAL MINDS, iCARLY and UGLY BETTY, and earlier this year had a reoccurring role on DAYS OF OUR LIVES. A funny and facile public speaker, Bottrell is frequently asked to appear on industry panels around town and regularly appears at Comedy Central's "Sit 'N Spin" show and other spoken word shows around L.A. His comedic POV column appears regularly in Metrosource Magazine and his essays have appeared on the Huffington Post and Salon.com. He was one of the original cast members of "Streep Tease," a comedy show that achieved cult status in Los Angeles, running for over a year at the Bang Comedy Theatre before playing a special engagement at New York's Public Theatre in June, 2011. His solo show, "David Dean Bottrell Makes Love: A One-Man Show," played to sell out crowds for months in Los Angeles. The son of a minister, he is originally from Louisa, Kentucky and currently lives in Los Angeles.

GALLERY

Performing on stage (after a 15-year hiatus) with the amazing James Read in "Better Angels"

On "Castle," November 2010. Cool J., Jada Pinkett-Smith and Cedric the Entertainer. Studio work includes scripts for Fox Searchlight, MTV Films, Paramount and Disney. He has sold pitches and original specs, adapted novels, rewritten scripts by other writers, worked in feature animation and recently scripted his first movie musical. Although primarily a writer, he is probably best known these days for his reoccurring role as the creepy "Lincoln Meyer" on ABC's BOSTON LEGAL. His weekly blog, PARTS AND LABOR (a seriocomic look at being middle-class in Hollywood) has developed a dedicated following. (see sidebar for more info). A former off-Broadway playwright ("Dearly Departed") and active WGA member, he mentors young screenwriters each summer in the Outfest screenwriting lab (a program he helped found seven years ago). His first short film, AVAILABLE MEN (which he also directed) had its world premiere at the 2006 HBO Comedy Arts Festival and went on to win 17 "Best Short Film" awards on the festival circuit including the World Comedy Festival in Toronto. Recent acting gigs include guest star roles on "Castle," "Ugly Betty," and "Criminal Minds." A funny and facile public speaker, Bottrell is frequently asked to appear on industry panels around town and has guest-lectured on screenwriting, creativity and spirituality at several universities and seminaries around the country. His comedic POV column appears regularly in Metrosource Magazine and his essays have appeared on the Huffington Post and Salon.com. In 2009-2010, he was one of the original cast members of "Streep Tease," a comedy show that achieved cult status in Los Angeles, running over a year at the Bang Comedy Theatre. The son of a minister, he is originally from Louisa, Kentucky and currently lives in Los Angeles.

Acting (Demo Reel)

<img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; Truthfully, I was pretty terrified at first, but playing "Lincoln" turned out to be one of the happiest experiences of my professional life. The producers, writers, cast and crew of BL were all amazing and wonderful to work with. I was really lucky to have landed on such a phenomenal show.

Answers to "Boston Legal" FAQs

No, I didn't write or improvise any of my lines. The writing on "Boston Legal" is fantastic and needs no help from me. It's all done by the show's creator, David E. Kelley and an incredible staff of writers who put it together each week.

The reason nobody's seen me before is -- I used to be an east coast stage actor, but I basically retired 15 years ago to work as a screenwriter in Los Angeles. "Boston Legal" is the first acting I've done in a zillion years.

No, I don't speak with an accent. The accent is based on a guy I used to work for when I was a student in New York. I don't walk, talk or act like "Lincoln." Keep in mind that learning to write takes time and you basically have to teach yourself. So be patient.

A while back, my friend John August (one talented guy) asked me to write a short piece on "How I Write" for his website which is devoted to giving good advice to screenwriters. You should by all means check out John's website (see link below). In addition to being a really gifted writer and director, he's one of the smartest guys in the business and takes great pleasure in helping other writers. http://www.johnaugust.com/

"How I Write"
by David Dean Bottrell

When I have an idea I really like, I launch into a fairly detailed treatment of it. This is where I find out if my seemingly ingenious idea will really translate into a viable (and fun) story. I do this because once I start writing the actual screenplay, my focus will naturally shift to the characters and dialogue and I can easily lose track of the big picture. Writing a treatment gives me a clear perspective on the overall story that I’ll never have again. And since (as we all know) story makes or breaks a screenplay, attention paid to it now will save me a ton of time and grief later.

Once I start the screenplay, the task is to make sure my story is fully and truthfully lived out by the characters — and if they seem to want to do things a little differently than I had planned, I let them do it. I never try to write well on a first draft. I just hammer it out. I never edit while I’m writing (that comes after I’ve finished a draft). After about three passes on a script, I’ll show it to someone I trust. Usually they confirm my worst suspicions and then the repair work begins.
From this point on, other people are going to be involved and my job becomes about shaping and reshaping the script based on the feedback I’m getting. The greatest lesson I’ve learned from this part of the process is that (contrary to MY former beliefs) other people sometimes have terrific ideas that can significantly improve my script. Not always, but sometimes. Sometimes I agree to a change that I don’t initially like only to find that within a couple of days I love it and can’t wait to take full credit for the idea! In my experience, screenwriting (kinda like life!) is about choosing a path, then accepting the inevitability of change and learning to deal with it creatively.

I have yet to have a normal day at work. I write daily though I don't keep specific office hours. I'm not one of those guys who can write in coffee shops - mostly because I live in L.A. and inevitably someone always comes up and asks what I’m writing and then wants to tell me about what he’s writing and then I somehow wind up agreeing to read his script.

Sometimes my work day is dictated by deadlines so there are occasional late nights. Generally speaking, I protect my writing time by turning off phones and disconnecting from the internet - which can be a very tough thing to do since writing is at times a lonely process. I’ve found that not much good work happens if I am in a bad or cynical mood so I have lots of goofy (AKA “borderline idiotic”) tricks I play on myself in order to stay happy and interested in the work — And if you think I’m going to tell you what they are, you’re sorely mistaken, bub. Mostly, I try to respect and take pride in being a writer which helps me sit there and do it when I’d much rather go out and get drunk.

Advice on Screenwriting

Fox Searchlight's "Kingdom Come" screenplay by David Dean Bottrell & Jessie Jones.

If you want to learn about screenwriting, there are zillions of books on the subject (all of which say the exact same thing) so just pick one and start reading. Keep in mind that learning to write takes time and you basically have to teach yourself.

Check out John's site: http://www.johnaugust.com

They are surprisingly simple, but do require some practice… ‘Technique’ should never feel like a straight jacket; it should free you up and reconnect you to your talent... Bottom line: there are only two things that will ultimately sell you as an artist: The quality of your imagination and your ability to access it… No matter where you are on your path, you can always increase your skill. You can always get better. -- DDB”

DAVID'S 2011 DEMO REEL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xWZ8G1ClNEYv=xWZ8G1ClNEY
